Montrealers with long memories will recall the battle between the residents of Overdale and real estate developers who wanted to build condos on the street back in the 1980s. Well, they never did build them, but the next street over wasn’t so lucky. At least they preserved the Victorian-era home of Louis Hippolyte Lafontaine, the first premier of the United Province of Canada. It’s actually up for sale if you’re looking to buy something cozy downtown.

I had the pleasure to interview Lucy Ridell this afternoon at Sun Youth. She’s one of the co-chairs of the charity’s first ever capital campaign to raise funds for a permanent home, but what we talked about was a refugee mother from the Congo and her twin toddlers that she brought to their food bank. She was touched by the compassion and dignity that their volunteers and staff showed to this young woman and her children so when Sun Youth later called her to help with this important fundraising campaign she knew that she couldn’t say no.

Spent some time wandering in the woods today. This time of year before the leaves are out and the black flies haven’t arrived is one of the nicest times to explore the forest. I stood by a marsh and listened to the blackbirds and the ducks calling and nearby could hear the sound of turtles splashing in the water as they tumbled off a log. It never gets old.

Still climbing the steep learning curve for deep sky astrophotography. Not only do you have to figure out how to work all of the gear, but you've also got to master some intricate image processing techniques to make them look half decent. These photos are pretty amateurish compared to what others are doing, but I'm just happy that I've made it to this point because some of my early attempts were miserable failures. Here are some popular galaxies in Ursa Major that I've been looking at from my light-polluted backyard: the Pinwheel Galaxy, Bode's Galaxy and the Cigar Galaxy. I've got a long ways to go before I'm any good at this, but any time you can spend looking up at the stars is time well spent.

Sad to see the city chopping down so many of trees in the parks near me. Not sure if they were diseased or damaged from the last ice storm, but it’s going to be a couple of lifetimes before trees this big come back.
