Tonight we played the analog version of Root for t Tonight we played the analog version of Root for the first time. I finished dead last while playing the Woodland Alliance and am beginning to think I need to play this asymmetrical game a lot more times to figure out the best strategies for the different factions.
It’s the first clear day in possibly three weeks It’s the first clear day in possibly three weeks so I thought I’d go out to get some vitamin D, but by the time I got outside, the sun was already setting. So I took a walk instead to the marina to look at the ice.

My top 9 from this year probably explains a bit wh My top 9 from this year probably explains a bit why I'm getting tired of Instagram's algorithm. It's showing me too much of what I don't care about. The result is I don't always see what other people are sharing and it's inspiring me to post less and less. Three of the nine shots relate to my detached retina back in February, including the only two selfies I posted last year and everyone knows how much Instagram loves to push selfies. For what it's worth, the eye is somewhat better, but my vision in the affected eye is only 20/40 and now requires cataract surgery. The rest of the nine are rounded out with a couple of boardgaming shots, some pretty Laurentiens photos, one from the tulip festival in Ottawa and a winter walk I took while recovering from the multiple torn ligaments in my left knee last December. That has also since healed and I've been playing hockey multiple times a week since June. Here's hoping you all had a great 2022 and an even better 2023.
For our last board gaming night of the year, I cho For our last board gaming night of the year, I chose travel-themed games. We started with Marco Polo Expeditions, a typical Reiner Knizia game that has you racing caravans across the desert. Fun, but nothing special. Next up was a light filler game called Clear For Takeoff where each player is racing to get their three planes to take off from the airport. Kind of random, but cute. The final game was Jet Set which has players building air routes across Europe. It’s reminiscent of Ticket to Ride, although perhaps closer to the game Alan Moon created before that, Airlines Europe. This one is mechanically pretty simple to play, but there are a lot of mental gymnastics necessary to play it well. It’s an obscure title that’s probably out of print, but worth checking out.
Merry Christmas to all. May your holidays be sweet Merry Christmas to all. May your holidays be sweet and all your wishes come true.
