Our latest board gaming session introduced us to R

Our latest board gaming session introduced us to Reykholt, a worker placement game that is kind of like a breezier Agricola. It is ostensibly set in Iceland, but it could be anywhere. Easy to learn and quick and easy to play, it’s a good game if you’re playing with non-board game obsessives. Other games to hit the table were Penny Press and Exploding Kittens.

It seems like it's cloudy every night, but I found some exposures I took a few weeks ago of M27, the Dumbbell Nebula, in the constellation Vulpecula. The colour cast seems to be a bit off and everything needs to be sharper, but seeing conditions weren't that great so I'll blame that instead of my equipment or technique. I also don't know why Instagram turns my brightest stars into outlined circles.

Made a pilgrimage to the Dungeon Hobby Shop Museum

Made a pilgrimage to the Dungeon Hobby Shop Museum in Lake Geneva, WI to see the original home of TSR, inventors of Dungeons & Dragons. I saw plenty of games from my youth and some original editions that are worth a small fortune today. This lovely Beholder is in their gaming room that you can book for your own D&D sessions when you visit.

For an astronomy nerd like me, it doesn’t get an $For an astronomy nerd like me, it doesn’t get any better than a visit to Yerkes Observatory near Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Some of the biggest names in astronomy worked out of here and it’s the home to the world’s largest refracting telescope. If only I could have visited at night during one of their observing sessions! For scale, that tube is 65 feet long.$

Anyone who played Dungeons & Dragons back in the day knows that it originated in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. In recent years, there have been more efforts to honour one of the game’s co-creators, Gary Gygax. In the local library, there is a corner of books from Appendix N of the 1979 Dungeonmaster’s Guide which listed the fantasy books and authors that inspired him. As a teenager, I pored over that list seeking my own inspiration so I was happy to sit in a chair in the library not unlike Gygax’s own Throne of Reading. Later, I walked by his home which today is billed as the Birthplace of D&D.
