News and Notes: NewLeaf takes to the sky, Indian luxury trains and OneOcean’s latest honour

It’s the middle of summer so lots of people are on vacation and, hopefully, travelling so news is a bit slow in the travel world right now, but here are some interesting tidbits that flowed through my inbox in the past week that I thought you might find interesting:

A new, low-cost airline takes to the skies in Canada

NewLeaf Travel Company will lift off with flights leaving from Hamilton, Kelowna, and Winnipeg on July 25, 2016.

Following NewLeaf Travel Company’s June announcement that they would resume sales for flights to 11 Canadian destinations, President and CEO Jim Young credited the more than 16,000 Canadians who “purchased tickets and placed their trust in NewLeaf Travel Company. ”

Less than one month after ticket sales opened, NewLeaf announced that the inaugural flight from Hamilton to Moncton on July 29 has sold out.

NewLeaf Travel Company in partnership with Flair Air offers a long-awaited ultra-low-cost option for Canadian travellers.  NewLeaf Travel Company achieves base fares that are below other Canadian carriers through cost-saving measures, such as operating out of regional airports with lower landing fees; flying a simple point-to-point network with minimal time between flights; and offering purchase options for carry-on verses checked baggage, priority boarding, and call-centre assistance.

The TreadRight Foundation partners with Just A Drop To bring clean water To Cambodian communities

The TreadRight Foundation, created as a joint initiative between The Travel Corporation’s (TTC) family of brands, has partnered with Just A Drop, an international water development charity, to bring clean and safe water to three villages in the Kralanh District of Cambodia.

Funding from the TreadRight Foundation will allow Just a Drop to deliver high impact interventions in water supply, sanitation and hygiene with strong involvement of community leadership in each of the three villages.

The project aims to transform the lives of 1,806 people who live in the villages of Damrey Slap, Knar Chor, and Rolom Sway by improving general health as water-related illness decreases; improving quality of life through sanitation and hygiene; making it so that children are better able to secure an education, as they are not ill, nor needing to collect water; making it so that women are better able to earn income, as they have no need to fetch water, thereby improving gender and social inequality; making more money available to communities as they will spend less on medicine; and creating a situation in which more people are likely to stay in the villages, as economic conditions improve.

Through its support of Just a Drop, the TreadRight Foundation continues its mission to ensure the environments and communities TTC’s family of brands visit remain vibrant for generations to come.  Multiple TTC brands, including Trafalgar, Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection, Contiki, Busabout, and Insight Vacations, provide unforgettable travel experiences within Cambodia and they are proud to be contributing to the sustainability and development of the destination.
